Eternal Sabbath is a manga by Fuyumi Souryo, mangaka of MARS. It is 8 volumes long.
The story revolves around the first product of the ES research, a man called ES: a code name taken from a mysterious scientific experiment. ES takes on the name Ryousuke Akiba, dead son of an old couple. Ryousuke in fact will live to be at least two centuries old and possesses strange mental powers: He can enter people’s minds, discover their darkest secrets, even rearrange their memories so that complete strangers will treat him like family (thus, how he can become Ryousuke). There is also a young doctor, Mine, who cannot seem to find love for her over-passion for her work. Lastly, a surviving researcher from the ES labs who is trying to find the two ES'. Ryousuke acts not out of malice but for survival–wandering Tokyo for reasons known only to him. No one recognizes him for what he is . . . until Dr. Mine Kujyou, a determined researcher, meets someone who challenges everything she knows about science–ES, possessor of the Eternal Sabbath gene. But is he the only one?
And he finally has a name
ES has a 0 chapter that focuses on Shuro and how he becomes Ryosuke. It serves as the basic introduction to the series, and the powers of ES. In it we see a young man describing the feeling he gets from waking up. He wakes up, fully clothed, in a hotel and without paying he walks out of the place. The staff first try to stop him, but with one look from him they forget he hasn't even paid. On seeing that the weather is changed, he goes to a clothes store and once gain the same thing repeats: he gets knew clothes without paying and without staff realising. He then explains how he does it, that he can go into a persons mind and "gather information and manipulate it to my advantage". He seems pretty happy about this ability, that it just comes naturally and works on 99.9% of the population.
AS is next shown he can even go up to strangers and they will treat him like their friend. The three he picks are talking about a murder of a homeless man near a school. This leads them to realising that the man shouldn't be there, at which point Es leaves and the two go on talking like usual. Bored, and interested in home life ES decided to check out the one guy- Minori- home.
The family is the parents and two sons, ES is posing as the oldest. The youngest brother, Takeshi, arrives home and ES sees the murder he witnessed in his mind. Later that night, ES is curious to why a average families son would have such images in his head and looks into his heart. In this way he sees what happened, how the murder happened. Seems some guys were bullying him and the homeless man protected him. Yet, when the guys turned on the homeless man he couldn't return the favour. ES notes his regret and guilt, and how it is eating him alive. He then decided to go see the main bully, Matsuo Naoyuki.
Es enters his house and listens as he is one the phone to one of his friends and accomplice in the murder: about how they must now kil Takeshi as the witness to their murder. Late at night they meet in an old factory, and Es follows. He notes that in reality it is none of his business, but then he remembers Takeshi's pained face. Seems like our ES has a heart, a really good heart.
He goes into the kids mind, and sees how is growing corrupt. Feeling angry towards him, he manipulates his mind so that he sees the lighter flame grow into the form of a woman; who wraps her arms around him and sets him alight. His friends here him screaming "put it out" but there is nothing visible to their eyes so they don't help. He returns to the right frame of mind for a second, before he opens his shirt where there are burn marks on his chest... except again it's only to his eyes. At this point ES leaves.
In the end Matsuo surrenders, but he still thinks he has been burnt and is taken to a hospital. Takeshi sees this on the news but is stil angry. Es absorbs his anger, leaving only the pain and regret which he tells him to deal with himself. He then comes across a old man holding a teddybear, and a neighbour tells him that the old man lost his kids and his grand kid Ryosuke. Es smiles and the old man looks up and recognises him as Ryosuke. And so that's how ES becomes Ryosuke- "and he finally has a name".
He penetrates others' inner thoughts, sometimes slightly modifying others' memories. But ES bears no ill intent. He's just playing with and putting order into the "inner-self", this invisible world full of confusion and choas.
What will unfold next is the story between the young man known as "ES", Akiba Ryousuke, and a researcher at Touhou medical center, Kujo Mine.
And that is where Eternal Sabbath really begins.
Real story behind ES existence
Both Shuro and Izaku were products of immunology research: focused on cancer cell treatment and gene therapy rsearch. That, in turn was code name for research into immortality and anti-aging. The researchers wanted to find a gene that would prevent damage and infection, and thus prevent the person from dying. Eventually they succeded and found the gene which they called "Eternal Sabbath". This gene evolved the immune system, and soon they created Ryosuke to test the gene in a living organism. Without knowing of any other abilities of the Es gene, they cloned Shuro to create Izaku. Izaku was different from Shuro, where Shuro was the first and taught about being human Izaku was born to be "sacrificed": he was born to be dissected for research. Thus, izaku was raised in a mechanical womb. The researchers didn't know about the extra abilites that both Shuro and Izaku had: and so without realising it Izaku had been reading there minds for years and he knew his fate. Without knowing human emotion and the difference from right and wrong, he fought back.
As Sakaki tells mine in volume two chapter seven, Izaku first killed the research director. Then Izaku awakened and exacted his full revenge, and escape. He killed all the researchers, using his powers to make them turn on each other, and set the insitute alight. Sakaki was immune to it though, and through that he was contacted by Shuro. Shuro stops Sakaki's death, and tells him to release him in exchange for protection. It is only then that Sakaki, the last living researcher, learns of the powers of the ES and of what Izaku had done and is doing. From the research center only Izaku, Sakaki and Shuro escaped: everything else was destroyed. Now, Sakaki wants revenge: to kill Izaku and stop him from getting his revenge on mankind. And, once Mine learns the truth she too wants to stop Izaku as "we(humans) have our pride too".
